Churches of Anglesey and Caernarfonshire

The Romans occupied Anglesey from 78AD to 410AD, after which Wales remained mainly pagan. From the 5th century onwards, Celtic saints came over from Ireland to set up monasteries.

A number of churches on Anglesey can be dated from between the 5th and 12th centuries. Many of them have early Christian gravestones in the churchyard.

The main period of expansion for the churches in this area was from the 11th to 14th centuries. All of the churches in this gallery are well worth a visit. Sadly a few of these are no longer in use as places of worship.
